What won't a house cleaner do?
Last reviewed August 21, 2026 by the cleaning.miami team
Short answer
A standard clean does not include laundry, dishes, moving heavy furniture, decluttering, organising, or anything that needs a licence or a ladder above a step stool: biohazard cleanup, mold remediation, pest work, exterior windows above ground level. Most cleaners will also decline to clean around heavy clutter, and many will not handle pet or human waste. Some of these are add-ons; some are a hard no everywhere.
Key facts
| Never included, anywhere | Mold remediation, biohazard, pest control, wiring, ladders |
|---|---|
| Usually declined | Pet waste, litter boxes, heavy furniture moving, hoarding conditions |
| Often an add-on | Laundry, inside fridge and oven, interior windows, inside cabinets |
| Worked around, not cleaned | Clutter, papers, toys, anything on the floor |
The hard no list
Some jobs are outside a cleaning company's insurance, its licensing, or its staff's safety training. No amount of paying extra changes these, and a company that agrees to them is a company whose insurance you should be asking about.
- Mold remediation. Wiping surface mildew off tile is cleaning; removing established mold from drywall or an air handler is a licensed remediation job, and in Florida that distinction matters
- Biohazard cleanup: blood, human waste, needles, anything after a death or a serious accident
- Pest control. A cleaner can remove droppings; the infestation is somebody else's licence
- Anything requiring a ladder taller than a two-step stool, which usually rules out high ceiling fans, chandeliers and exterior second-floor windows
- Electrical, plumbing or appliance repair, including removing an oven door or a plumbed-in filter
- Moving heavy furniture, appliances or anything liable to damage a floor or a back
- Cleaning a home with active hoarding conditions or standing sewage, which is a specialist trade
The soft no list: available, but not by default
These are ordinary requests that simply are not in a standard scope. Ask in advance and most companies will price them; ask on the day and you will get a polite no because the visit is already booked to the minute.
- Laundry. Many cleaners will run a load if it is agreed in advance, but folding and putting away is usually its own line
- Dishes. A sink of dishes is normally emptied into the dishwasher at best; a full washing-up is not standard
- Inside the fridge and inside the oven, even on a deep clean
- Interior window glass, and window tracks outside a deep clean
- Inside cabinets, drawers and closets
- Pet waste, litter boxes and accidents; some cleaners will, many will not, and none should be surprised on the day
- Childcare or pet-sitting of any kind, including letting a dog out
- Balcony and patio cleaning, which is weather work rather than house cleaning
Clutter is the big one
Cleaners clean; they do not decide where your things live. Papers on a table, toys on a floor and clothes on a chair get moved or worked around, not put away, because putting away requires knowing where things go and creates a real risk of being blamed for a missing item.
This is the single largest determinant of how much value you get from a visit. A cleared kitchen counter gets cleaned end to end. A counter with a laptop, three bills and a fruit bowl on it gets cleaned around the laptop, the bills and the fruit bowl. Twenty minutes of clearing before a visit converts directly into a better clean.
Not a scope question but worth saying
If a cleaner declines something, it is nearly always insurance, licensing or safety rather than unwillingness. Asking why usually gets you a straight answer and often a referral to whoever does handle it.
Related questions
Will a house cleaner do laundry?
Many will if it is arranged in advance, typically running a load during the visit rather than folding and putting away. It is not part of a standard clean at most companies. Agree it when you book so the time is priced into the visit.
Do house cleaners wash dishes?
A standard clean does not include washing up. Most cleaners will load a dishwasher or clear a sink enough to clean it, because they cannot clean a sink full of dishes. A full washing-up is an add-on if it is offered at all.
Will cleaners move furniture to clean underneath?
Light furniture, yes: chairs, small tables, bins. Sofas, beds, wardrobes, fridges and washing machines, no. It is a floor-damage and injury risk, and moving an appliance can disconnect a hose. If you want under a bed cleaned, move it before they arrive.
Can a cleaning service remove mold in a Miami home?
They can clean surface mildew on tile, grout and glass, which is routine work in this climate and part of any competent Miami deep clean. Mold growing in drywall, insulation, cabinetry or an air handler is remediation, which is a separate licensed trade. A cleaner who tells you the difference is doing you a favour.
What happens if I ask for something outside the scope on the day?
You will usually get a no, and it is not personal. Visits are scheduled tightly, so an unplanned extra hour comes out of somebody else's booking. Ask when you book, or between visits, and the same request is usually easy to accommodate.
